Getting to Emory from the Airport

The nearest airport to Emory’s campus is the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL). To get

to Emory from the airport, several options are available. After making it to the “Ground Transportation”

area, you will find car rental kiosks, taxi stands, and information about shuttles. If you need assistance

at the airport, visit the new Airport Information and Ground Transportation Center, located in the

arrival’s lobby. The center’s hours of operation are 7:00am to 11:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Taxis or shuttles are generally the fastest and most convenient ways to get to Emory but also the most

expensive. A taxi from the airport to the Emory Inn, University Inn and most other surrounding hotels will

cost about $40-45.00 (though prices may vary) and will take approximately 30 minutes. Allow at least an

hour for travel time during rush hours, 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Taxi costs from

most hotels nearby campus to the airport will be about $45.00 for the first person. It will be cheaper if

there is more than 1 in your party.

In the past for other conferences the official Emory Conference Hotel has recommended the Atlanta Superior

Airport Shuttle. One way from the airport costs $30; roundtrip costs $50 (if purchased at the same time):

The shuttle runs from 6:00am to 11:30pm. If attempting

to make a reservation on the Atlanta Superior Shuttle home page, under “Service Area and Pricing” you

will see a list of selctions. Look for the 16th selection below the top: “Emory Area Hotels” and select that

option. You will see the one way and round trip costs listed.

Public transportation is also available, but because Emory’s campus is not served directly by a train line,

the option requires a bit more coordination. Atlanta’s mass transit system is MARTA (Metro Atlanta Rapid

Transit Authority). MARTA operates bus and train service throughout Atlanta. Fares at this time are just

over $2.00, and discounted weekly passes are available. Fares must be paid using Breeze Cards or Breeze

Tickets, which can be purchased at the train station. The Emory campus is accessible from the Lindbergh

MARTA station. From the airport, take any train northbound to Lindbergh station and transfer to the #6

Emory bus to the Emory campus. This route serves the main campus, Woodruff Residence Hall, and Emory

Inn & Conference Center. For transit maps and schedules, visit MARTA’s homepage, or visit the Atlanta

Trip Planner, operated by Citizens for Progressive Transit. (It is much more user-friendly than MARTA’s

Renting a car is also an option. There are a number of car rental agencies located at the airport.

Getting around Atlanta

Generally, Atlanta is a car city. If you wish to truly explore the city and its surroundings during your visit,

you, and perhaps a couple colleagues may wish to rent a car. If you do, remember to try to avoid morning

traffic from 7-9 am and afternoon from 3:30-7:30 pm as they are especially congested.

Aside from traditional car rentals, there is an hourly car rental service called Zipcar. The number of cars

around campus is limited, but this may be a great option for some quick trips. Remember, you must be a

registered user in advance.

Public transportation around Atlanta is rather limited but Emory is accessible from both the Lindbergh

and Inman Park stations via the #6 Emory bus. You may also take the #36 bus from the Arts Center and

Avondale stations. The #245 Kensington/Emory express bus also serves Emory from the Lindbergh and

Kensington stations. Please allow travel times of 1-2 hours for most popular locations.

Emory has a free shuttle service that traverses the campus and its immediate surroundings on a regular

basis. On a more limited schedule it also travels to several popular shopping centers and other attractions.

Taxi service around the city is also limited. Don’t count on walking up to the street corner with a raised arm

and expecting a cab to stop! Unless you are on Peachtree Street you mostly likely need to call a cab. From

Emory, this can take some time. Some taxi service options are American Cab Company (404) 873-1410 and

Checker Cab 404-351-1111.

Visitor parking is also available in any of the parking lots on Emory campus for commuters. There is an
hourly cost that stops after 5pm on weekdays and all weekend.
